The 14 Perfect Picks for San Francisco’s Outside Lands

Music’s elite and outdoor music festival aficionados are ready for this weekend festivities at Golden Gate Park, now that Outside Lands weekend is here. I remember the first year with Radiohead and though it has now grown to be quite a production, it still has that NorCal essence of free spirit and love that San Francisco is known for.

Now that we have the vibe out of the way, let’s go and plan those looks that are quintessential music chic, yet versatile and perfect for the not-so sunny living. Though Palm Spring’s Coachella, Tennessee’s Bonnaroo and Chicago’s Lollapalooza are known for scantly clad gals wearing bikinis and sun dresses, the scene up here is a bit different when it comes to sartorialisms.

Below are some of my picks that not only will make you want to jam, but will have you turning heads.

Outside-Lands-Style

1. Maxi dress: This is a must for a gal that wants to feel light and comfy. With this look, you do need a lot of layers, so make sure you grab some cozy accoutrements. H&M Has a fantastic alternative for less than $30 and what’s even better? They now have e-commerce.

2. Boots: Heels are not practical here, considering you’ll be surrounded by mud, grass and possible cold temperatures. Make sure you are able to walk and stand for long periods of time, considering bathroom and snack lines will probably go around the block. Frye’s Shirley riding boots are perfect for the occasion.

3. Scarf: Believe me, this is a must for San Francisco’s ‘fogust!’ The key to success here is preparedness. Good thing Banana Republic has plenty of options.

4. Denim jacket: Sturdy, fashionable and easy to clean. Plus, it pretty much goes with any style, so this is a win-win situation that will sure keep you warm. Zara has great alternatives and so does Gap.

5. Flowers in your hair: It doesn’t get any more Northern California than this! I mean, you are in San Francisco after all. You’ll certainly shine with this little number from ASOS.

6: Fun Jewels: They add a pop of color and are fun. Though these Dannijo earrings are a bit of an investment, go with other alternatives, like this pair from Target, in case you want to keep it light on the wallet.

7. Girly cross-body: Nothing screams music festival fashions more than fringe — especially in San Francisco, since the vibe here is more bohemian than anything else. Consider it a Stevie Nicks circa 1970s homage. This one from Nine West will keep all your goodies pretty safe.

8. Sunglasses: Despite the clouds, don’t be fooled since you’ll still be getting some rays. Also, wear some SPF because you might even get a little bit of color. Go with these Prada tortoise shell cat eye style, since they are retro and fun at the same time.

9. Straw hat: Playful and perfect to keep the rays away. Plus, if you want to keep your hair away or hide roots, this is the perfect accessory. Good thing Vince Camuto has a couple of fantastic styles under $50.

10. Colored denim: Perfect for the chilly temperatures at Golden Gate Park. What’s even better is how easy it is to clean if beer spills or is stained. French Connection has some great option.

11. Chucks: A great alternative if you don’t want to boot it up all weekend. All-Stars also work super cute with tights, shorts and even skirts. Oh yeah, and super easy to clean post festivities.

12, 13 & 14. Layer, layers and more layers: The poncho can serve as a blanket, the tee is perfect in case it does get warm for those 20 minutes and jackets are simply a San Francisco must.

So there you have it, my Golden Gate Park essentials for Outside Lands. Can’t wait to see the bevy of beauties rock their looks during the soothing sounds of Paul McCartney, the Red Hot Chilly Peppers Phoenix and Hall & Oates — among many other badass bands.

Will you be going to this weekend’s big bash?
