Ryzenberg On: The Kaiser Visits a Supermarket

Karl Lagerfeld running errands, visiting a laundromat, buying groceries and reading the sports page. Sounds like something we do, but this is certainly not part of the famed couturier’s daily routine.

French Elle is doing a special eight-page spread showing the eccentric Chanel mastermind doing things, ‘just like us.’ He recently launched his ‘masstige’ line ‘Karl’ on Net-a-Porter in January, and was welcomed with huge success. This is also part of his stint as a guest editor and political columnist for the magazine, even though he publicly admitted to never voting!

The photos also showcase Saskia de Brauw (who appeared in the Kaiser’s Spring/Summer 2012 Resort campaign) and Caronline Brasch Nielsen donning some of his designs.

According to WWD, during the interview, Lagerfeld recounts how he hasn’t driven since he was 18, claiming he is “a chauffeur-driven kind of guy,” and was amazed at the junk food varieties at grocery stores, considering he had never set foot in one.

“Fascinating what one can buy. There is enough here to easily gain 20 kilos,” he added.

OK, we get it. This man clearly lives in the lap of luxury and some of us live vicariously through him. I mean he does have 32 iPhones, countless iPads and palatial retreats that mimic those of blue bloods.

After all, wouldn’t you live like this if you were referred to as ‘Kaiser’? I am sure the ‘other’ kaiser, Franz Beckembauer, (long-time German soccer superstar) lives the same way.

No, actually, I think Lagerfeld is simply one-of-a-kind. And we love him for it.
