Ryzenberg On: Kanye’s Paris Fashion Week Fiasco
Could he be or not be….A designer — That’s what many pondered upon seeing rap star Kanye West’s Spring/Summer 2012 Paris Fashion Week collection. When the looks came down the runways, models donned short leather dresses, tight pants and fur (yes, fur for spring) and many gasped, gawked and talked.
“Ask someone else,” said US Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour when asked about her thoughts on the collection.
Others, however, were a little bit more welcoming of his couture creations. Former Vogue Paris Editor-In-Chief and author Carine Roitfeld attended the show and fashion Superstar Anna Dello Russo wore one of his pieces to a fashion fete. Many of his A-list compadres, including the Olsen Twins, La Lohan and Ciara sat front row and showed major support.
Other show shenanigans? His rumored romance with super model Chanel Iman, who also sashayed through the catwalk. Wonder if they are a couple, a publicity stunt (or both!)
To me, Kanye is a music genius and somewhat of a loose canon, (case in point: his diatribe filled with f-bombs at the end of his show) and that’s a quality I admire and despise at the same time because I love unpredictability. The old saying ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ clearly applies to his debut collection.
Stick to music Kanye — that’s your calling and just work on a product licensing deal, a perfume or a clothing line to be sold at JC Penney or big-box stores. And take note from Jay-Z, Russell Simmons or your BFFs Mary-Kate & Ashley!
After all, not everyone can be as posh as Victoria Beckham.
