The world suffered a major loss this week as Oscar de la Renta passed away surrounded by family and friends. Though I didn’t know him personally, I got a glimpse of his personality and demeanor through his designs, countless photographs, fashion shows and interviews I have read throughout the years. He was a gentleman, a doyen in the design world and an all-around class act who treated everyone he came across with with the outmost degree of respect.
His designs are iconic to the American aesthetic — classic, well-tailored, beautiful and always full of grace. He dressed hundreds of socialites and celebrities and clearly understood the magic behind working a rocking a red carpet. So many thoughtful tributes were written today, from Anna Wintour to even fellow fashion designers like Diane Von Furstenberg, who fondly remember the beloved designer as a sweet friend and individual.
Farewell to a legend, a man whom I never had the chance to meet personally but who allowed me to dream and imagine myself donning one of his creations for one special occasion after another. I visited his West Hollywood boutique with my best friend Sarica and spent the afternoon perusing around dozens of gorgeous gowns. Amongst the shopper was a mother and daughter trying on some bridal gowns that were divine — as if they were made specially for them and you could see through her eyes how she felt like a princess. Ultimately they left the store undecided and I often wonder if she wore one of his creations for her special day.
Oscar, you made thousands of women look and feel beautiful on so many occasions. Whether it was a cotillion, a luncheon or a black tie affair — you knew how to make them stand out in style and grace. The fashion world not only lost a gifted artist, but a mentor to many, a friend and a respected colleague.
To me, you were someone to look up to, inspire and dream — thank you, for inviting us all to your world through your sketches.
May you forever be remembered.
