When I was asked to volunteer with Nike for the Women’s Marathon last week, I jumped at the chance. I knew it was going to be fast-paced, full or energy and very inspiring to be surrounded with women from all over the world who are making history and a difference.
This whole experience sure made an impact on me. I’ve lived in the Bay Area for six years and have dozens of friends who’ve competed in different endurance challenges like walks, triathlons and races. I never thought I’d have the guts to even finish the course, but now I am evaluating the idea to challenge myself to 13.1 miles of that is not about the finish line, but the journey.
Before I come to any conclusions, I want to share what was like being a volunteer at the Union Square Women’s Expo, as it started a bit rocky. A bomb threat was called on Thursday morning, delaying the process for nearly two hours. It was a bit scary, but everyone handled it like true professionals and we were back on our posts in no time.
Women of all colors, races, paces and ages came to pick up their packets and spend some time at the expo, which was filled with encouragement, incredible spirits and state-of-the-art running gear. It was fun to see hundreds of runners snap photos, get pumped up and reunite with running buddies and teammates. For lack there of better words, it was ELECTRIFYING.
For me, it was all about finding out what took these women to get here. What inspired them? How did they train? And more importantly (for me, at least) how did they learn to run. These women (and men) are helping the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society raise money for a cure. I can’t stop reading everyone’s tweets and look at the incredible photos — I mean, wow.
My beloved readers who happen to be runners, please share your stories. I’d like to learn more about all of your adventures and get some advice on how to get started.
For all of you that participated — I just have one thing to say and that is, CONGRATULATIONS!
