Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot (Big Apple Heat Wave Style)

Spending time in New York City during a major heatwave is no laughing matter. I know I write quite a bit about appropriate sartorialisms for a variety of climates, but usually, they involve layers and boots. Oh not this time, my friends!

I had forgotten what is like to experience calor of this proportions. In fact, Boston in 2008 was the last time I was in the heat of the moment, and we ran for massive air conditioning.

Though having lived in Miami, where 90 degree weather plus 100 percent humidity is rather common, when it comes to the Northeast, it’s like a whole different ball game. The air conditioning is not as strong and usually there is some walking and mass transit involved, which can be rather stuffy, to say the least.

Alas, there are certain basics everyone should have when the warmer days pay an early (or recurrent) visit.

Heat-Wave-Style

The Basics:

A good fan: If your air is not so strong (or don’t have any) a good fan will be your BFF. Get one that is easy to use and doesn’t consume too much electricity. Sometimes, the portable ones are rather easy and powerful — and always remember to shut it off when you are not home.

Flip Flops and flat sandals: Yup, in sweltering days heels might not be as practical, since you may have to walk more or stand longer to wait for a cab or bus. Use one that still gives some support and is blister-free. Usually Havaianas are my go-to when I need to get some errands done. Want something fancier? Check out Lola Cruz.

Shorts: Seriously, when it comes to this weather, less is more. Jeans are certainly too sticky and even a maxi dress can get stuffy. Luckily, Banana Republic just launched their Milly collaboration, so these little elephant shorts are perfect for a hot <not so> child in the city.

Soft Cotton Top: Something that doesn’t stick is key. I am a fan of this Calypso St. Barth tunic tank (on sale — BONUS).

Sunnies: Make sure they protect against UV rays. Because it is all about saying no to wrinkles. Ray-Ban has a great selection of styles and are budget friendly. Go with something timeless that will last all season and is versatile with different looks.

Bathing Suit: The heat can be unpredictable, so a good bathing suit is a must — especially if you plan on going to the beach and pool later on. Though this is a personal matter, always go with a piece that makes you feel comfortable. This season there are plenty one-piece options or even fun ‘monokinis’ for every budget that easy to wear and timeless. No worries, of course I will be tackling this issue in an upcoming summer beachwear post! My summer favorite? This number from Melissa Odabash.

Bag/Tote/Clutch: Stay away from leather as it can get ruined! Instead go for a fabric since they are easy to wear  and light to carry around. This straw clutch from J.Crew is fantastic to go out for cocktails at night. Since San Francisco is my home, I am accustomed to reusable bags, which are quite en vogue and washable in case something like sunscreen or water gets spilled.

Toiletries: The last thing you’ll want to wear is a heavy foundation or strong scent. Go with something fresh and fun like Daisy by Marc Jacobs and Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid makeup. Always wear SPF above 30 and avoid chapping those lips, and Neutrogena and Nivea offer some of my favorites.

Fun Jewels: Tis the season to bring out lots of color. Corals, turquoises and gold are fantastic options to liven up that ensemble and be playful. Always bring some sparkle out, but leave some of the glitter for those sultry evenings. Amrita Singh has a fantastic selection of playful accessories.

Headgear: In this case, the bigger the better — though remember it is not the Kentucky Derby! I like this one from Hat Attack.

Feel like sharing? Let me know what your favorites summer musts are! I’d love to do a reader fan favorite post soon.

Enjoy the weekend and stay cool, dry or warm (wherever you are)
