Fashion Gets Punk’d

Hollywood’s biggest night is the Oscars, but when it comes to the crème de la crème of fashion, nothing stands taller than the Met Ball, also known as the Costume Institute Benefit.

Held in New York City every Spring, it is the prom for the fashion world (and it doesn’t come spared of dramatics such as dates, dresses and even a theme). With Rooney Mara, Lauren Santo Domingo, Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci and Anna Wintour as co-chairs, get ready to see everyone in the who’s who of sartorialisms strut their stuff dressed to the nines.

This year’s theme is quite eclectic, since the Met exhibit is called PUNK: Chaos to Couture. It starts with its beginnings in 1970s Britain and continues with more than 30 years of the group’s evolution and influences on high fashion, designers and style.

I rounded up a couple of iconic punk images from the 1980s in London. During my first visit to this style capital, I was mesmerized with their Mohawks, elaborate make up and extreme use of safety pins. I remember starring and even thinking, ‘how can you go about your day looking like that? It looks like a costume.’ Little did I imagine that this ‘getup’ was to be a muse for many designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Rei Kawakubo (Comme de Garçons), Christophe Decarnin (Balmain) and many others.

Want to be part of all the action for tonight’s red carpet? Watch the live stream here starting at 7p EST. If NYC is in your plans this summer, be sure to stop at this terrific retrospect and check it out for yourself! I also have some ideas to express your inner-punk and create a wearable look.

Sid Vicious & Nancy Spungeon: Punk Rock’s ‘it couple.’ Sadly, these two fools in love never achieved their fairytale ending, since the Sex Pistols bassist stabbed Nancy to death during a drug binge at NYC’s Hotel Chelsea. Sid later died of a drug overdose.

Bobbies & Punks: Iconic punk image from early 1980s London. I don’t think all encounters with the law were this friendly.
