Ryzenberg On: Pollock Pants

After a rough week filled with stress and more than a handful of existentialist ponderings, I needed a break and some inspiration for upcoming posts.

Instead of hitting the de Young Museum for the much-anticipated Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit (was not in the mood to deal with crowds and long lines, so I will go a week before the show closes during the summer) or the SF MOMA’s latest photography display about modern Mexico, I opted for a different cultural experience: Bloomingdales.

I know West Coasters have a fascination with Nordstorm, but I am a Bloomies gal at heart. (Let’s just say my shopping habits are very Freudian and anything that takes me back to my childhood days is a MUST) and it also didn’t hurt that their Friends and Family event was in full force.

Upon arrival, I looked aimlessly for a pair of Current/Elliott denim I spotted online, but were nowhere on sight. I approached a sales associate named Grant, who understood my angst and asked him for the aforementioned pants. “We don’t have that style,” he responded. “But you might like this Rag & Bone printed pair we just got in.”

I begrudgingly accepted and after complementing me on my outfit (H&M cobalt jeans and a Madewell silk green blouse adorned with an oversized Cimber horn necklace) Grant escorted me to the nearest fitting room and this conversation took place: (verbatim)

Ryzenberg On: “Yay or Nay?” [wearing the Rag and Bone pants and my green top]

Grant: Rapidly responds, “They look so cute. They go perfect with your shirt.”

Ryzenberg On: “Are they too tight? Do they make me look huge?”

Grant: “That’s impossible. You are TINY (often used sales tactic) and they make your butt and legs look great!”

Ryzenberg On (inner thought): Tiny is not a word often used to describe my ever-growing assets, but, alas, SOLD.

He went on to give me some useful styling tips and we talked about the current pastel and neon trends and well, those Current/Elliotts I originally had in mind, became a thing of the past. Grant also picked an incredible Helmut Lang knitted top to go with it, but I declined because that was indeed what I like to call, ‘fashions for the 1 percent!’

I left Bloomingdales with a new pair of pants and a printed blazer I will sure be sporting all ‘summer’ in the city by the bay and more importantly, a smile on my face.

That night, I did my usual styling sessions and some additional research at home. It turns out the pants, called the ‘Surf Knit Legging,’ are one of the season’s IT items and almost sold-out! (Guess I came in early for the 3/30 delivery – hooray)

This colorful style, reminiscent of a Basquiat or Jackson Pollock painting mixed in with Point Break, were worn by jet setting beauties during last month’s fashion weeks in NY, Paris, Milan and London – now this feisty fashionista also has a piece of one of spring’s most coveteables!

Voice of Reason (a la Ryzenberg On): If you can’t afford a piece of art to hang on your wall or set on your table, just buy clothes that evoke self-expression! Their value might certainly increase in the future…

Ryzenberg On Style – The key to a success here is to keep it simple. The pants are the piece de resistance, so keep the jewels to a minimum or stick to neutrals. This is also a fun look to mix and match prints and stripes are indeed a winner!
